Arkansas State University percussion professor Brian Graiser will perform a set of his own compositions for solo vibraphone at the biannual Music Faculty Showcase Concert, which will take place this coming Tuesday. Dr. Graiser will be joining several other music faculty members in an evening of solo and chamber music performances, adding to a program that also includes works for cello, piano, brass, and woodwinds.
As Dr. Graiser is one of A-State's newest faculty members, this performance will serve as his on-stage introduction to the majority of those in attendance. He will first perform two movements from his seven-movement "Sketches in Noir" suite for solo vibraphone, which he completed in 2007 for his undergraduate recital at the University of Georgia while studying music composition and music performance. Then, he will perform a movement from his five-movement "MIZMOR" suite for extended-range vibraphone, which he completed in 2021 as a part of the vibraphone's 100th anniversary celebration.
The works Dr. Graiser has chosen to perform have played important roles in his career as a solo percussionist and vibraphone specialist. "For this concert, I'm going with something of a 'how it started/how it's going' concept" says Graiser, "since 'Sketches in Noir' was the first piece I ever had published and 'MIZMOR' represents where I'm at today as an artist. I can't think of a better way to introduce myself as a performer than with selections from these two works which have bookended my career up to this point."
The A-State Music Faculty Showcase Concert is open to the public and will take place at 7:30pm CT on Tuesday, September 20 in Riceland Hall at the Fowler Center.
